The new trailer for The Counsellor

This looks great, the cast is amazing, the screenplay sounds even better than No Country For Old Men and we have not seen Ridley Scott tackle a smaller project in quite a while. Definitely a candidate for the Oscars.

Joseph Kosinski will enter The Twilight Zone

The director of Tron: Legacy and Oblivion has reportedly signed on to direct WB's big screen reboot of the iconic TV series, The Twilight Zone. This project has seen quite of few changes, from the director shortlist having names such as Alfonso Cuaron (Children Of Men) and Christopher Nolan       ( Inception) to hiring Matt Reeves (Let Me In), who then drops it and goes on to direct Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Kosinski will bring a fresh visual style, but my thoughts on this are that should be an omnibus, where different directors and actors would collaborate, such as V/H/S or The ABC's Of Death.

Scott Frank is reshaping Assassin's Creed

Scott Frank, the writer of Minority Report and The Wolverine has been tasked to rewrite the script for Ubisoft's upcoming video game adaptation Assassin's Creed. The project starring Shame and X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender has a 2015 release date, so this probably is not a page one rewrite, as the movie will most likely start production early next year, considering the scope this franchise has.

Nolan's new project goes into production

Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi film, Interstellar started filming today. The logline tells a story of “a group of explorers who make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.”  The lead actor is Matthew McCoughnahey and the rest of the cast are (takes deep breath) Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, John Lithgow, Casey Affleck, David Gyasi, Wes Bentley, Mackenzie Foy, Timothée Chalamet, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine. It comes out on November 7. 2014.

I am very excited, Nolan is one of the best directors of this generation. I cannot wait to see what he does here.

Definitely need to see this! Click on the link!

Review-The Wolverine

After the events of X-Men:The Last Stand (X-Men 3), in which our titular hero had to make a hard decision. Logan AKA Wolverine  is a shadow of his former self, he has abandoned his X-Men teammates and lives a solitary life in the wilderness. He is brought out of his hiding by Yukio, who works for Yashida, a man whose life was once saved by Logan during World War II. Arriving in Tokyo, Logan comes to see his friend, who wanted to thank him for saving his life and in return, grant him the wish to become mortal.

Let me start of, by writing that the last movie based around the character , X-Men Origins: Wolverine was very bad. It was a cheesy and forgettable action flick that replaced Steven Seagal with Hugh Jackman, therefore I was not thrilled when this movie was announced. I can safely say now, that my fears for this film did not come true, as this new entry in the X-Men franchise is surprisingly good!

Right from the beginning, director James Mangold and his writers establish it as a Wolverine film, by this I mean truly putting him in the forefront and surrounding him with mostly human rather than mutant induviduals.
The story and the script are tailored to be a character study of Logan, giving room for some great character development of not just the main actor, but also the supporting cast with it best used on Mariko, the love interest and Yukio, probably the closest to a sidekick Logan has in the picture. What I also love is that through the entirety of the running time, the hero is always in physical danger, as well as going through psychological torment with the usage of crafty dream sequences. The action scenes are well done, nicely paced and exciting and shaky cam is nicely used to raise the tension and does not ruin them in the process.

Hugh Jackman gives his finest performance as Wolverine, proving that he is not ready to give up the character yet, because of everything that he goes through, Jackman is able to give an extra dimension and humanizing him to the fullest extent. Don't worry, Jackman is also in animal mode, slashing through villains like paper. Rila Fukushima and Tao Okamoto are solid as Yukio and Mariko, respectively, making them more than just two-dimensional puppets for the plot. The rest of the cast is serviceable.

The problems of the film start at the end, when the third act begins, where it decides to leave the character-driven arc to instead end it as a superhero vs super villain fight and tying up all the loose ends the fastest way possible. It creates this jarring tone and tests our suspension of disbelief. The second major issue is that the villainous Viper, played by Svetlana Khodenchenkova is heavily underwritten and feels unnecessary.

While not the best way to make a Wolverine movie, it is a solid fun movie and a nice return to form for the character

Final Trailer for Ender's Game

Aside some choppy special effects, this movie looks promising.

Willis out, Ford in

Slyvester Stallone had some exciting news to share on his Twitter account for Expendables 3 yesterday. He confirmed that Bruce Willis and his charachter, Mr.Church will not return for the movie, but had even more exciting news as Harrison Ford as joined the cast. Wow, Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Ford in one movie? This is turning into another great throwback action film. I do not care for Willis's departure as he appeared in both movies and I do wish they use more 'fresh blood' for this sequel.

Steven Spielberg will not adapt American Sniper

Steven Spielberg (E.T., Schindler's List) will not direct American Sniper and his production company DreamWorks also left the project. The report from Collider.com cites, that what Spielberg envisioned for the film, did not mesh together well with the budget of the project. Too bad Spielberg left this, this type of a movie would be a good challenge for the director, as it is something different than what he has done in recent years. The autobiography of Navy Seal Chris Kyle, who will be played by Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, The Hangover Trilogy) now has to find a director fast, if they want to make and release the film for a closer date.

Christopher McQuarrie has accepted the mission.

It seems that we know who will direct the upcoming Misson Impossible V. The director is Christopher McQuarrie. He directed Jack Reacher, which starred Tom Cruise. McQuarrie has a good eye for action scenes because those where the highlight of Jack Reacher. Both him and writer Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) have their work cut out for them. All they have to do is maintain the quality of the previous one, Ghost Protocol.

SIZE MATTERS - Pacific Rim review

We all carry a great sense of wonder. It seems to hide away as we get older, but was always strong and persistent when we were children. We could sit down and really make something out of nothing physical, or tip our toy-box all over the floor and just go mad. Pacific Rim is Guillermo Del Toro at his most unleashed. He's been given the toys for his sandpit and has gone completely beserk, but he has also created a sense of wonder from completely nothing.

The plot is simple. Kaiju (monsters) from another dimension break through to ours and wage war on the planet and us humans must do what we can to stop them. So we build giant machines called Jaegers. General audiences are doing the worst thing by comparing this to Transformers or Battleship simply because of some simple image traits. Well I'm here to tell you that you're way off and also working comparisons in the wrong league. Del Toro has crafted an insane Sci-Fi movie, full of old-school thrills, special effects and brilliantly entertaining set pieces that all meld together in beautiful harmony, with just enough satisfying human moments and arcs that carry a nice balance of emotion and action. It all blends well with the loopiness of it all.

There's just so much to love, that not even some minor pacing problems or a couple of sub-par performances can destroy the experience. Mainly its in the lesser background characters, but for me I'd say that Charlie Hunnam doesn't quite shine in the lead. He's certainly more than commendable, but he just doesn't break out here. Idris Elba steals the spotlight with a look and a bellowed delivery and its amusing to watch and Rinko Kikuchi has such an incredible skill with her mannerism and in her eyes, that's its a shock that she isn't in more films. Ron Perlman comes and goes and works his usual incredible moments.
Pacific Rim is triumphant above the rest of the blockbuster herd. It knows what is missing from the norm and just goes crazy with it. Its a big, giant load of awesome fun. Prepare your jaw muscles, because you'll be smiling throughout.

"Pacific Rim" is just simply awesome. Now, it may not be for everyone, but if you love action, giant monsters, and giant robots, you'll definitely love this. Or if you're just trying to have some fun, watch this. It's got both brains and brawn.

Review-Videodrome

About 15 minutes into this movie you figure out that David Cronenberg is a director who is not to be toyed with. This movie provokes intelligent thought, and terrifies those who can't comprehend it. This film stimulates, offends, and moves those who care to watch it with an open mind.

Allow me to explain. I won't bother to go into detail about the plot. A sleazy, lowlife TV producer named Max Renn (James Woods) rapidly becomes obsessed with an unusual television signal, which in turn begins to warp his perceptions of reality. Get it? Nah, of course you don't.

I won't even try to pretend I understood what was going through Cronenberg's mind when he wrote and directed this picture. It's warped, it's perverted, it's depraved, and it's insanely intriguing and fascinating. The masses are frightened by "Videodrome" and with good reason. "Videodrome" is Cronenberg's dastardly take on mass-media consumption during a time when television was afraid to be real. Media violence had not yet become a major issue and hypocritical politicians weren't condemning it. But keep in mind this film was made in '83, years before the mind-blowing reality-morphing of "The Matrix" (1999).

There's a little more that I think I can get away with in describing the plot. Renn eventually traces the signal to Pittsburgh, and is introduced to the station's enigmatic programmer Brian O'Blivion (Jack Creley) and his daughter Bianca (Sonja Smits). He learns of the bizarre nature surrounding Videodrome, and the fate of those of who watch it. As he becomes more and more obsessed, he finds it nearly impossible to turn it off, or turn away. Then those mutations and hallucinations Cronenberg is famous for start happening and when that does, things become nasty and the queasy may want to keep a finger on the fast-forward button. It's no secret Cronenberg loves torturing his protagonists and here, the "new flesh" wants to live long and Woods has the nice warm body perfect for it - he becomes a literal media assassin with a vaginal slit in his stomach that doubles as a programmable VCR and also has a handgun fused to his wrist - he's a virtual slave to Videodrome.

Lastly, the eerie, driving score by Howard Shore swells up during the film's most intense and surreal moments, the most lovely being Woods's lovemaking with his television.

"Videodrome," I think, has a lot more relevance today than it did 22 years ago. It's a movie that is more creepy than it is scary, more visceral than gross, is quite brilliant, and doesn't spare us graphic violence and gore. It's alive, it's "Videodrome."

Review-The Fly

The Fly tells a story of a scientist who experiments with teleportation, after one of his experiments, he notices certain changes to his body and as his body changes, so does his mind.

This is the best way to give you a plot synopsis for this great movie. To put this film under the horror genre is actually a disgrace to this movie. The story has big ideas, but it chooses to be a more personal, charachter-driven story, which is tad different than your usual horror movie. The biggest flaw of the movie is that the script itself is pretty standard, from pacing to the writing and there are certain elements that I think could have been maybe more developed, especially one charachter, who was a nuisance for the entirety of the film.

The true brilliance of this movie lies in the two protagonists and actors, Seth Brundle and Veronica Quaife, played by Jeff Goldblum(Jurassic Park) and Geena Davis(Thelma and Louise), respectively. The relationship shouldn't even exist considering they are polar opposities. Seth is a genius and an outsider, a man consumed by his work who just hasn't truly developed any real relationships and Veronica is a hard-hitting journalist who is looking for her big scoop. As their partnership progresses and turns into something more, it doesn't feel tacked-on or forced, it feels very natural, we are watching real love form between these two people. Goldblum and Davis are master-class actors and they bring the best of their talent in this flick. Goldblum hits all the mannerisms and little twitches of a misunderstood genius, you can feel the passion he brings to his work and the dissapointment when it fails, after a certain experiment, he develops mood swings and finally we see this somewhat tragic charachter feel empowered, with a cost to his sanity. But the real star of the movie is Davis as she goes through a mix of emotions, especially during the last act of the movie, when she sees her love physically changing into something different she is in pain, we feel for her and her hardship.

The special effects are nothing short of, astounding. Chris Walas and his team have done an incredible job at bringing Cronenbergs' nightmarish vision to life. Of course, because this is Cronenberg movie his trademark 'body horror' is in full swing here. Just skip the 1 hour 12 min till 1 hour 14 min. You might lose your appetite.

A Brilliant film with perfect performances and a great special effects team. A truly masterclass in film making.

Review-Olympus Has Fallen

In 2013. we are getting two movies based on the same plot: a Die Hard-esque movie which involves the main charachter to save the President Of The United States. As you see by the title of this review, Olympus Has Fallen is the first one and White House Down is the second and will come to our theatres in about two weeks.

Secret Service agent Mike Banning, played by Gerard Butler (300, Law Abiding Citizen) is one of the best men on the job whom President Asher, played by Aaron Eckhardt (The Dark Knight, Thank You For Smoking) considers a friend, but after a horrible tragedy strucks both Banning and Asher, Banning is demoted to a desk job. During a visit from the South Korean Prime Minister, North Korean insurgents, lead by a mysterious North Korean, played by Rick Yune(Die Another Day) attack and seize the White House, it's up to Mike to save The President and maybe even the world.

The film is essentially a Die Hard rip-off with a patriotic inspired script that puts an emphesis on swear words and macho lines from B-list action movies. Nothing out of your ordinary action movie, but the good thing is, that the movie and its' plot are very tight so it doesn't take long for the action to begin and when the action starts it does not stop until the end. Director Antoine Fuqua (Shooter, Training Day) gives the action scenes an edge and ferciousness with the most impressive sequence being the actual takeover, which happens in stages, shows Fuquas' great sense of scope.

All the charachters, except for our main hero are one-dimensional stereotypes, which is sad considering the amount of quality the actors in this picture have, Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Angela Bassett (Malcolm X) to name a few, with that said, it was great seeing Gerard Butler fight the foreign attackers. Combining his physicality and Fuquas' good camera work lead to some well-done fight scenes.
To sum it up, Olympus Has Fallen is better than your usual generic action flick, but not that much.

Akira lives again!

For years, Warner Bros. has been trying to get a live-action adaptation of the famous anime Akira of the ground. It seems this project has traction again as it rehired director Jaume Collet-Serra(Unknown). Last time, WB stopped pre-production because they wanted the script to be rewritten and decided to cut the budget. Now that  they have solved these problems, the studio wants Serra back as they are "in love with Collet-Serra’s vision".
I am not happy, as I am absolutely certain that the entire cast will NOT be Asian, rather Caucasian. Second, this director hasn't really impressed to give him a benefit of a doubt. We'll see in the coming months how this project develops.

American Hustle trailer

The first trailer for David O Rusell's new movie, American Hustle. The best of Russell's cast from his previous two movies, The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook intergrated with a very interesting story. I think this could be this years' Argo.

Lone Survivor trailer

The first trailer for the upcoming action movie Lone Survivor, directed by Peter Berg (Battleship). So it's Act Of Valor but with bankable stars. That's it.

We are getting a new Bourne movie, sort of.

A new Bourne movie is being planned that will again focus on Jeremy Renner's character, Aaron Cross. Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) is reportedly hired to write the script. I don't know, Bourne Legacy wasn't bad, but you could notice a drop in quality after Damon ended his run. We shall see.

The search for the new Batman has begun !

I think everyone by now knows that the upcoming Man Of Steel sequel will have Batman in it and it will not be Christan Bale.So the hunt is on for the new actor to take up the cape and the cowl. The contenders are:
Josh Brolin(No Country For Old Men), Ryan Gosling(Drive), Richard Armitage(The Hobbit Trilogy), Joe Manganiello(Magic Mike), Max Martini(Pacific Rim) and Matthew Goode(Watchmen).

These are all fine choices, but as there can be only one(refrence!), the man for the job should be Armitage. He resembles the comic book Bruce Wayne, has a menacing presence and likes to kick ass as Thorin Oakenshield.

Richard Armitage
