Review-The Fly

The Fly tells a story of a scientist who experiments with teleportation, after one of his experiments, he notices certain changes to his body and as his body changes, so does his mind.

This is the best way to give you a plot synopsis for this great movie. To put this film under the horror genre is actually a disgrace to this movie. The story has big ideas, but it chooses to be a more personal, charachter-driven story, which is tad different than your usual horror movie. The biggest flaw of the movie is that the script itself is pretty standard, from pacing to the writing and there are certain elements that I think could have been maybe more developed, especially one charachter, who was a nuisance for the entirety of the film.

The true brilliance of this movie lies in the two protagonists and actors, Seth Brundle and Veronica Quaife, played by Jeff Goldblum(Jurassic Park) and Geena Davis(Thelma and Louise), respectively. The relationship shouldn't even exist considering they are polar opposities. Seth is a genius and an outsider, a man consumed by his work who just hasn't truly developed any real relationships and Veronica is a hard-hitting journalist who is looking for her big scoop. As their partnership progresses and turns into something more, it doesn't feel tacked-on or forced, it feels very natural, we are watching real love form between these two people. Goldblum and Davis are master-class actors and they bring the best of their talent in this flick. Goldblum hits all the mannerisms and little twitches of a misunderstood genius, you can feel the passion he brings to his work and the dissapointment when it fails, after a certain experiment, he develops mood swings and finally we see this somewhat tragic charachter feel empowered, with a cost to his sanity. But the real star of the movie is Davis as she goes through a mix of emotions, especially during the last act of the movie, when she sees her love physically changing into something different she is in pain, we feel for her and her hardship.

The special effects are nothing short of, astounding. Chris Walas and his team have done an incredible job at bringing Cronenbergs' nightmarish vision to life. Of course, because this is Cronenberg movie his trademark 'body horror' is in full swing here. Just skip the 1 hour 12 min till 1 hour 14 min. You might lose your appetite.

A Brilliant film with perfect performances and a great special effects team. A truly masterclass in film making.
